Treasurer, Kathie Sprout
Kathie Sprout has owned llamas for over fourteen years. Years before that, she
fell in love with them and remembers a particular farm on the way to Mt St.
Helen’s where she would pull over to the side of the road and gaze at the herd
of llamas there. Like many others, she started out with two geldings. A few
months later she bought a pregnant female with a 7-month-old cria at her side.
Over the years her herd swelled to as many as eighteen llamas. However, severe
back problems have caused her to find homes for most of them and she now has six
females and a stud. Kathie stopped breeding her llamas years ago and is quite
content with enjoying her little aging herd. Kathie has particularly enjoyed
introducing llamas to new people and enjoyed sharing what she has learned with
new llama owners. Many of these folks have turned into life-long friends. “I was
as green as they come when it comes to owning livestock, but others a long the
way have helped me learn and I want to pass that information on to others.”
Kathie has been retired from the State Fish and Wildlife department for over
fifteen years. She still works as an accountant one day per week for a local
church.
